Students with scholarships meet Sponsors

This year 32 students of the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg received German scholarships. These students met their sponsors in the university on 24th January 2013. The total sum of this sponsorship amounts to 115,200 euros.

The University Rector Mr. Lieber said at the official meeting “It only makes sense to award the scholarships when the contact between the sponsors and the students has been established”. Ms. Loreen Effenberger, from the company VEGA Grieshaber in Schiltach used this opportunity at this meeting of students and sponsors to say “Our companies should try to attract more and more students – the German scholarships are very suitable for this”.

Number of German scholarships has doubled

Compared to the previous year, the University has doubled the number of German scholarships which were awarded. In the coming years the number of scholarships could increase to 8% of the total number of students. “That would be 320 scholarships for 4000 students – an ambitious challenge for all participants” Mr. Lieber said.  Hermann Weber, the long-standing vice chairman of the University council and former Chairman of the Board of the Sparkasse Offenburg/Ortenau, introduced the individual scholarship students one by one. They subsequently got into conversation with their sponsors. “The German scholarships are a good start to establish a scholarship culture also in Germany” said Dr. Ulrich Tjaden, head of the University’s own “Career Centre”.

The German scholarship is a programme from the Federal Ministry for Education and Research. It is awarded, regardless of the parents’ income, to talented, capable and committed students. The University raises half of the scholarship from private sponsors, mostly businesses in the region, the other half is given by the Ministry.
